Student Handbook

The following is a summation of the practices and expectations that have been a part of Vanier for many years. It is being placed in this form for the awareness and good use of the people of Vanier.

Angel In Our Mist

We are all called upon to be kind. Our Vanier Vision enjoins us all to be members of a Community of Kindness. This applies first of all to ourselves and we are each charged with this responsibility. Our kindness however must extend to others and it often does. As a special emphasis however, we wish to bring our neighbors to your attention. Twice a year Vanier will organize a massive neighborhood clean-up.

It is a difficult and frustrating thing to own a home in the vicinity of any school and in particular a high school. Please be kind to our neighbors and respect their privacy and their property. If we can achieve a level of kindness with them they will certainly appreciate being our neighbors. Example (parking, smoking, littering, loitering)

Announcements

If you want an announcement read please make sure that you write it into the Announcement Book prior to 8:15 A.M. We want to limit announcements to the beginning of Period 3 each day and your cooperation will help make this possible.

Attendance

Your attendance at school is a matter of serious concern to all members of staff at Vanier and we are committed to addressing this issue.

Full attendance is required to participate in any extra-curricular activities and or driver training. Exceptions can be sought by speaking to Ms. Hartney or Mr. Pearce.

If you are deficient in your attendance in any class the following will come into play:

Any student who is absent FIVE times from any particular class will be WARNED in writing of a possible dismissal from class. This dismissal may occur any time after TEN absences. Your parents will receive a copy of this advice. Any student who is absent SEVEN times from any class will be further warned and you will be given the opportunity to submit a plan. Your parents or guardians will receive a copy of this warning and your plan.

The only exceptions to this attendance policy are excused absences for the following reasons:

  • a) compassionate
  • b) sports
  • c) hospitalization
  • d) driver education
  • e) public health diseases
  • f) chronic or extended illness
  • g) school related activities

Classroom suspensions and voluntary school suspensions will be included in the calculation or absences while school suspensions as executed by the Principal or Vice-Principal will not count.

In addition to absences, LATES which are most often an unnecessary disturbance to class will be counted. Every three lates to any particular class will be considered ONE absence to be taken into consideration when making any calculation with respect to attendance.

A notification of dismissal advising that you have not been dropped from one or more classes will be sent if you violate our attendance policy.

Cheating

Any student caught cheating or aiding another student to cheat on an examination or an assignment will have her/his work confiscated and be given a "0". Additional action may be taken depending on the circumstances.

Christian Ethics Practicum

In our practicum we try to exemplify a living faith. "If one of the brothers or one of the sisters is in need of clothes and has not enough food to live on, and one of you says to them, "I wish you well; keep yourself warm and eat plenty," without giving them these bare necessities of life, then what good is that? Faith is like that: if good works do not go with it, it is quite dead. The Letter of James (2:15-17)

Other Practicum Requirements:

  • 1. Not for profit
  • 2. Must be done under supervision in social organization - (NOT a private, individual activity)
  • 3. All hours must be completed to receive a mark
  • 4. Recipients of benefits cannot be family members
  • 5. Practicum can be completed at any time prior to the end of a semester in which Christian Ethics is taken
  • (i.e. Summer, previous semester)

***If there is any uncertainly regarding whether a particular activity qualifies, check with your teacher.

Classes

Be on time for classes. Carry Period Two and Three books in the morning as you start your day. Have pencils, books, paper, pens, etc. with you.

When entering the classroom, sit down, organize your materials in preparation for class. When the bell rings, all socializing stops.

Be cooperative in class. Raise your hand when you have a question to ask or an answer to give. Wait your turn if there is more than one student whose hand is raised. A student who comes to class unprepared or who disturbs the class can expect to be kept in after school or face other consequences.

School Colors

Vanier Collegiate has official school colours; they are RED and GREY. Their use is encouraged in every respect whether it is for school uniforms, jackets, shirts, supplies, materials, etc.

Commencement

Commencement normally takes place on the last Saturday in October. Members of the Graduating Class are asked to attend this important event. Commencement is also open to any student who wishes to attend. Commencement 2000 will take place on Saturday, October 27, 2001 at 7:30 P.M. at Saint Joseph Church.

Courtesy and Respect

As a student at Vanier you are expected to exercise good judgment in your behavior and have complete respect not only for all members of staff (caretakers, office staff, teachers), but also for each other.

Students must obey any reasonable request or order of any member of staff. Any case of overt opposition to authority will result in a suspension.

Small courtesies such as opening a door or saying "Please" or "Thank You" or "Pardon Me" are appreciated by everyone.

Dances

Dances are held on a regular basis at Vanier. These dances are open to all students in good standing with three exceptions:

  • * a) students absent the day of the dance
  • * b) students who have lost their social privileges
  • * c) students who owe books or fees to Vanier

Vanier students are permitted to invite a maximum of TWO students from other schools to these dances on three conditions:

  • * a) guests must be signed in by announced deadline.
  • * b) guests must be in good standing at her/his school
  • * c) the Vanier host student accepts responsibility for the behavior of her/his guest(s) at the dance.

Members of Vanier's S.R.C. will act as buffers at the entrance to all student dances.

All dances at Vanier will be sock hops (no shoes).

Anyone who is asked to leave by the S.R.C. is expected to comply with the request immediately. Any student who leaves when asked by the S.R.C. will not lose social privileges.

Any Vanier student who attends any dance under the influence, whether at Vanier or any high school in Moose Jaw, will lose social privileges for a period of six school dances.

If a guest of a Vanier student attends a dance while under the influence, the host student will lose her/his social privileges for a period of four school dances.

Any grade 12 student who attends any dance under the influence will not only lose any remaining social privileges but will also lose the right to attend Vanier's post grad celebrations.

If, at any dance, two or more students lose their privileges, the next regularly scheduled dance will be canceled.

If any student in attendance at a Vanier dance while under the influence advises one of the teachers on duty of this fact, that student will lose her/his privileges for a period of two school dances and this will not affect the status of the next regularly scheduled dance.

If you leave the school during a dance, you cannot return.
